"Along the Way" by Daniel Ruf
Photography by Daniel Ruf
Though he was fairly new to photography in 1977, Daniel Ruf was accepted into a workshop at Yosemite National Park hosted by Ansel Adams as well as instruction from other distinguished Photographers including Yousuf Karsh and Philip Hyde. Perhaps it was Mr. Ruf's background from his dual college degrees in art and biology reflecting through his work that caught their eye. Learning side by side with those masters forever changed Ruf's approach to and handling of the photographic medium. His varied experiences from summer employment with the U.S. Forest Service to corporate photographer to agriculture have all served to build an artistic vision that is just as comfortable focusing on the beauty within the confines of a forest in Michigan as capturing a dockside scene in Arnolds Parks, Iowa.
Mr. Ruf's photographic work can be found in private collections throughout the country. His work has been showcased in several juried invitational exhibits including the Lanesboro Arts Gallery in Minnesota and locally at Arts on Grand and Pearson Lakes Art Center. In 2014, he was honored with a one person show entitled "Developing" at the Pearson Lakes Art Center. Mr. Ruf was also honored as one of a select group of Iowa Photographers whose work was chosen for permanent display on 5x8 foot backlit panels as part of the multi-million dollar renovation of the Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines. Most recently his work continues to be published in several magazines including Our Iowa magazine, as well as, The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, an organization dedicated to "protecting and restoring of Iowa land, water and wildlife".
In November 2017, Mr. Ruf received the Best of Show award for his entry "Farmers Hope" in the Wanda J. Skogerboe Juried Exhibit at the Pearson Lakes Art Center with the honor of a one person exhibit at the art center in August 2019.

What is DP+?
"DP+" stands for "Digital Photography Plus", a process Daniel uses on certain digital images that he believes will enhance the photograph. All of his digital images start at the camera and then are loaded into the computer for editing.
When the normal editing process is finished, he may decide to take things a bit further by applying one or more digital painting processes to the image via various computer programs. When he is satisfied with the results of this process, he prints the image on a high quality fine art paper on his Epson Stylus photo printer.
After 48 hours of a drying process, he sprays 3 coats of a protective spray on the surface of the print and allows that to dry.
24 hours later he will apply two coats of an acrylic varnish by brush which leaves a brush texture over the surface. After another 24+ hours of drying, using acrylics, he paints on the image to highlight areas of the print that he feels will enhance the quality of the subject and the surroundings.
A final coat of acrylic varnish will seal the last process of painting followed by at least 48 hours of drying to complete the process.
As you can see, the process is more involved, but it completely changes the character of the image, hence naming it DP+!
