My watercolor
paintings and colored pencil drawings reflect my life in the upper Midwest
- rural landscapes, florals, architecture indicative to this area (simple
porches and barns to ornate Victorian structures). However, recent
trips to the beautiful Rocky Mountains have greatly inspired me.
This 'flatlander' has fallen in love with the mountains and they continue
to be the subject of my most recent work. My approach to my artwork
is realistic and my style ranges from loose flowing brushstrokes to
tightly controlled detail. I paint, first of all, for my own
enjoyment and expression. If anyone enjoys my work, that is an added
bonus for me. I look for spatial relationships within my subject
matter. I love surface texture, varied lines, negative spaces and
the effects color can exude with a piece. I am always striving to
experiment, learn more and to promote the arts.

I photograph Iowa barns and then
paint watercolor miniatures of them. Next they are framed in authentic
Iowa barn wood. The frames are unique with wood triangles in each
corner and outside standup edges. The result is a special
7"x9" framed painting of a fast disappearing part of Iowa history |

I reside in
Estherville, Iowa. I enjoy painting in several mediums, Watercolors,
colored pencils, and Scratchboard drawings. My paintings are images
of nature, landscapes of Iowa, including local and Okoboji scenes.
Also paintings of the Roseman Bridge in Winterset, Iowa, where I was born.
I attend Art shows
and exhibits every year. Pursuing a career in Art has been very
rewarding, and has enriched my life tremendously. The highlight of
my career was receiving 'Best of Show' for my Art. I also have a
career in "First Day of Issue" covers, which is a art form
painted on envelopes. |

My background is in apparel design
and fashion illustration. I enjoy experimenting with mixed media,
and have a passion for exaggerated and arbitrary texture and color.
Painting from photographs so as not to lose realistic detail in contrast
with color unrestrained by reality. Portraits of my children and
family express the quirky nature of the individual portrayed. My
paintings of houses are similar to portraits, and express my feelings
about life and the people who live inside of them. paintings are a
mystery waiting for revelation. An absorbing process evolving into
the final image, and the importance of realizing when you have found it.

Pat Phipps

Spirit Lake, IA 51360
The author has written short
vignettes for adults covering a wide range of topics. Some are
humorous; others are more serious or provocative. Phipps has raised
five children, taught every grade level from three-year-olds to people in
their 80's at the college level. She has also worked as a marriage
counselor, and as a counselor in a private setting for children coming
from broken homes. All of these experiences have given her fodder
for the stories.
