Arts on Grand will present a concert by two recent Spencer High School alumni on Sunday, February 19, at 2:00 p.m. at the Old High School Auditorium. The concert will feature Isaac Brockshus playing solo piano and also accompanying singer Kim Steffen. This is the first of a planned series of annual winter concerts featuring Spencer High School graduates who have gone on to make music their chosen profession.

At age 23, Isaac Brockshus has already enjoyed a remarkably diverse musical career as composer, conductor, and pianist. In December, Isaac graduated summa cum laude from the University of Northern Iowa, where he involved himself in nearly every department within the music school. His vast musical involvement has cultivated a rich compositional output that earned him a chance to study with renowned composer Sam Adler in Berlin. In April 2011, one of the nation's leading brass quintets, Boston Brass, premiered Rodomontade, Isaac’s winning entry in the group’s “Fanfares!” contest series. In that same month, Isaac conducted the acclaimed premiere of a daringly original work that incorporates both sounds and flavors into a singular musical experience.

Isaac’s work has been recognized by Pi Kappa Lambda and Sigma Alpha Iota Composers Bureau. In the case of the latter, Isaac enjoyed the rare honor of being invited to the group as an undergraduate. In addition to graduating with Honors with Distinction, Isaac gave the commencement address as representative of the student body. His creative energy and commanding stage presence netted him the People's Choice Award in UNI’s Spotlight Series Competition. He also currently reigns as Mr. School of Music. Active in his community and university, Isaac remains committed to the enrichment of the lives of others through music.

Kim Steffen currently attends Minnesota State University at Mankato, She will be graduating this May with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Musical Theatre. Kim’s MSU debut was the role of Yvette in Miss Saigon in the fall of 2008. Since then, Kim has been involved in over 19 productions either onstage, or behind the scenes with musical direction, choreography, playing in the orchestra, and more. Kim’s featured roles include Lilly St. Regis in Annie, Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street, the Ghost of Christmas Past in A Christmas Carol, Athena in The Odyssey, Cinderella in Into the Woods, and Jenny in The Shape of Things. In addition to appearances on MSU’s Mainstage Seasons, Kim has participated in two touring shows and was featured on the original soundtrack of Virgin Territory, a brand new work debuted in MSU’s Studio Season.

She received two Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Irene Ryan Nominations for her leading roles in 42nd Street and A Christmas Carol. Last April, Kim traveled to Washington, DC to perform the role of Athena in MSU’s production of The Odyssey at the Kennedy Center. Kim also received a Distinguished Achievement Award for her portrayal of Athena at the Kennedy Center, given by the organization’s National Selection Team.

With graduation approaching, Kim looks forward to putting her training to work as she pursues a professional career in the theatre. She credits Spencer for allowing her the opportunity to develop a passion for the arts she now seeks professionally.
